Our last safety message this week is about school buses and rail crossings.

When a school bus approaches a railway crossing, under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario, they are required to stop. Upon stopping, the driver looks in both directions along the railway track; opens the door of the school bus and listens to determine if any train is approaching; and when it is safe to do so, crosses the railway track.

Today in school bus safety we want to highlight the need to be visible at the bus stop. When it is darker in the mornings, you want to be visible not only to the bus driver, but other motorists as well. Wear bright colours, have something reflective on your person and stand near street lights where possible.
